About Forest Species

A field guide for everyone who loves trees.

We believe that knowing a tree by name is the first step toward caring for it.

Our mission

Forest Species is a free, independent guide to the trees that make up the world’s forests. Our goal is simple: give curious people — students, hikers, gardeners, teachers and nature lovers — clear and trustworthy information about forest trees, presented beautifully.

Every profile covers the essentials: where a species grows, how to recognise it, the role it plays in its ecosystem, how people use it, and how it is doing in the wild.

Clear facts

Short, plain-language profiles with a quick-facts table you can scan in seconds.

Trusted sources

Conservation status follows the IUCN Red List. We cross-check facts with botanical and forestry references.

Credited photos

Our images come from Wikimedia Commons and photographers who share their work openly. Every photo is credited.

Understanding conservation status

Each profile shows the species’ status on the IUCN Red List, the world’s most widely used system for measuring extinction risk:

  • Least Concern (LC) — widespread and not currently at risk.
  • Near Threatened (NT) — close to qualifying as threatened.
  • Vulnerable (VU) — facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.
  • Endangered (EN) — facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild.

Help us grow

Forest Species is a living project. If you would like to suggest a tree, report a correction or contribute a photo, we would love to hear from you.
